The state does not require licensure for the provision of nutrition advice, which means that you are a greater risk of receiving nutrition advice from someone who is not a qualified professional. The term ‘Nutritionist’ by itself is not a regulated term, which means that anyone in California can give nutrition advice. As noted previously, Registered Dietitians are the experts in nutrition with numerous years of training (a minimum of 5 years ) in order to practice nutrition. Whenever you take nutrition advice from just anyone, especially someone who claims to be a ‘nutritionist’ without the Dietitian Credential, you are putting your health at great risk.
